The Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra

The dynamics of chanting the Honmon Daimoku

The way to chant the Honmon Daimoku is to be guided by the tails of the characters Na Mu Myou Hou Ren Ge Kyou on the Hon-in-myou Daihonzon. These are sound guides. This method of chanting the Daimoku is currently unique to Honmon Shoshu.

The Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra is the very name of the True Buddha. Chanting the Daimoku means to call His name, beseeching Him to help us, and to heal us. The Honmon Daimoku is the wave motion that comes from proper chanting, and carries our sincerity to the Hon-in-myou Daihonzon.

The Hon-in-myou Daimoku is the perfect wave motion from the Hon-in-myou Daihonzon to humanity. This is the Buddha’s response to display of faith and sincerity, in which He transfers the Excellent Medicine to the one who sincerely call His name.

Concerning this matter, the Kanjin Honzon-sho has this to say:

“The practice and resulting merits of the Venerable Shakya are all contained in these five syllables: Nan’myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo. When we uphold these five syllables, the benefits of his practices will spontaneously be transferred to us.”
